Meet Bernadette

Bernadette is passionate about learning and regularly participates in professional development activities. She is a Certified Practising Member of Speech Pathology Australia.

How did it begin?

From a tender age, Bernadette knew that she knew that her calling was in healthcare. While looking at a university prospectus to help her decide what subject to study at university, she came across an image of a boy and a woman playing with toy animals. She noticed that the boy looked happy and that the woman’s interaction with him was the reason for this.

She read the description of the course – Speech and Language Pathology and realised that it combined her interests in the humanities and sciences and was sold that this was the profession for her and has not looked back since! Bernadette graduated with a Bachelors of Speech Pathology from the University of Newcastle, Australia in 2008.

She returned to her home country of Malaysia in 2009 and started working in a prestigious paediatric private practice located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.

At this practice, Bernadette worked with a culturally and linguistically diverse clientele which consisted of local Malaysians and expatriates based in the city.

This experience has honed her skills working with multilingual clients and those who speak English as a second language. During her time at this practice, she worked with a  client with cleft palate related speech sound disorders which she considered  her “muse” as her work with this client reignited her interest in  paediatric medical speech pathology, As a result, she decided to pursue further study at the University of Sheffield, United Kingdom and graduated with a Masters degree in Speech and Cleft in 2014.
